Iron Infusions (IVs) are a common treatment for iron deficiency. These infusions deliver iron directly into the bloodstream (intravenous), bypassing the digestive system and allowing for faster and more efficient absorption.
Benefits of Iron IVs:
- Quick Results: Iron IVs can rapidly increase iron levels in the body, providing faster relief from symptoms of iron deficiency such as fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.
- Higher Absorption: Since the iron is delivered directly into the bloodstream, it bypasses the digestive system and any absorption issues that may be present, leading to more efficient iron absorption.
- Reduced Side Effects: Some individuals experience gastrointestinal side effects from oral iron supplements, such as stomach upset or constipation. Iron IVs can bypass these potential side effects.
FAQs:
What is the process to get an IV?
Book an Iron Infusion Consultation with Dr. Korsa and send in recent bloodwork (within 3 months) that contains complete blood count (CBC) and ferritin. If you do not have recent bloodwork then Dr. Korsa will write you a requisition during your appointment. After that, as soon as we have your results (assuming a ferritin less than 100 is confirmed), you can book in for an iron infusion.
What are the costs for each type of infusion?
- Iron Infusion Consultation – Existing Patients (must have seen Dr. Korsa at least once): Free
- Iron Infusion Consultation – New Patients: $65
- Infusion cost: $240
- Iron Prescription Cost: $300-$550 depending on type of iron and dose.
- Non-pregnant patients will receive Monoferric 500mg or 1,000mg. 1 infusion is usually sufficient but may require 2 in certain cases.
- Pregnant patients will receive Venofer 200-300mg per infusion. Most likely will require 3 infusions. Because more than one infusion is needed, Venofer infusions will be charged at $190 per infusion.
How long does it take?
Be prepared to spend up to 90 minutes in the clinic on your first visit. Your first infusion will be done more slowly, and once accustomed, any further infusions will be quicker. The infusion itself will take 60 minutes within that time. In pregnant patients receiving Venofer, the infusion will take about 2 hours.
Is it safe?
IV Iron is a safe and effective treatment for iron deficiency. Dr. Korsa will discuss the safety profile with you before your infusion.
Are there any Side Effects?
The most common side effects are:
- Headache

What would I need to bring in with me? How recent of blood work would you need, and which items are you looking for?
